Brian Filipiak joins the panel at the 2019 Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) Conference
On March 4, our very own Brian Filipiak was given the opportunity to speak on a panel at the 2019 Building Envelope Contractors (BEC) Conference. Along with Paul Robinson of Pioneer Glazing and Neil Opfer, a professor at UNLV’s school of Construction Management, Brian contributed to a discussion that centered on hiring and retaining project managers, internal training, and millennial hiring.
The session, titled “To DIY or Not: Advancing and Improving Glazing Project Management,” focused on the ways in which collaboration, trust, and ownership all define a successful project management experience, and how schooling, on-the-job experience, or use of consultants impacts the life-cycle of a glazing installation project.
The panelists offered up their own perspectives and success stories. Paul Robinson talked about the ways in which Pioneer works with multiple colleges in the area to develop intern programs (CO OPS), ultimately hiring students after college; while Neil Opfer said that he is seeing 10 offers for every graduating senior. All the panelists agreed that the industry is extremely competitive, with students receiving a number of offers as early as their sophomore or junior year in college.
